Historias: El Costurero de la Reina

Este edificio fue levantado por el arquitecto Juan Talavera en 1893. Su construcción fue un encargo del Duque de Montpensier, admirador de la arquitectura orientalizante que por entonces estaba de moda en Inglaterra. 

El Duque decidió tener un pabellón similar para su deleite, cerrando para ello el muro del jardín en el límite sur del Palacio de San Telmo, en una época en la que Sevilla era considerada la segunda Corte de España, A demás de esta función, el edificio fue guardería de las piezas de caza menor.

En este momento histórico la tendencia imperante en Europa era la recuperación de los estilos arquitectónicos anteriores. A este tipo de arquitectura se le llamó historicista. En España el historicismo se centra en la recuperación del románico, gótico y mudéjar. Este último, de inspiración oriental, será el que marque la línea arquitectónica del Costurero.

El Costurero es un bello edificio, situado muy cerca del Parque de María Luisa. Presenta planta hexagonal con una torre en cada vértice y es el primero de estilo neomudéjar que se levanta en la Ciudad. Aunque popularmente es conocido como Costurero de la Reina, debido a su vinculación con María de las Mercedes, su nombre original es Pabellón de San Telmo.

THE COSTURERO DE LA REINA

This building was built by the architect Juan Talavera in 1893. It was constructed under the orders of the Duke of Montpensier, an admirer of the Orientalizing architecture that was then in fashion in England. The Duke decided to have a similar pavilion for his enjoyment, closing the wall to the garden for it at the southern edge of the Palace of San Telmo, at a time in which Seville was considered to be the second Court of Spain. Apart from this function the building was also used to store small game.

At this moment in history the prevailing trend in Europe was the revival of previous architectural styles. This type of architecture is called historicist. In Spain historicism was centred on the revival of Román, Gothic and Mudejar styles. This last of oriental inspiration, would be the one that would mark the architectural lines of the Costurero.

The Costurero is a beautiful building, very close to the Park of Maria Luisa. It has a hexagonal shape with a tower at each crown and was the first neo-Mudejar style building built in the city. Although it is popularly known as the Costurero de la Reina, due to its connection with Maria de las Mercedes, its original name is Pavilion of San Telmo.
